Hello all, Of late I’ve been into reviewing products and it has been a while since I shared my travel experience. So today I decided to share my travelogue to Udayagiri Fort which is one of the historical places in Kanyakumari district with you all. Udayagiri Fort is located 14 km away from Nagercoil at Thuckalay town, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India. It is on the Nagercoil – Thiruvananthapuram highway and was the most important military barracks of the Travancore rulers when they were ruling Kanyakumari district. This sounds like an extract from a History book. Isn’t? Well, I feel it is important to know about the rich history of the place before visiting it and it will change the whole experience. Being a History lover and of course a nature lover, I was so excited about the visit. The entrance fee is Rs. 10 per person and additional Rs. 50 for camera. They have bicycle renting options which costs Rs. 20 for an hour. The fort is built in an area of about 90 acres and has the tombs of Dutch Admiral Eustachius De Lannoy – a Flemish naval commander of the Dutch East India Company, who later served as the Chief of the Travancore Army, his wife and son inside a partly ruined chapel. As we entered, there were different trees and well maintained plants on both the sides that we could smell freshness in the air. On the right side is a pond which has peddling boats but unfortunately they were on repair when we visited. Apart from the forest like atmosphere, the fort had a white squirrel which somersaults, geese that quack, peacocks that dance, rabbits who are timid and deer who are always eating (quite literally). Then we started walking through the passage which had beautiful and tall bamboo trees. I’m sure that kids would love this place as it also has a kid’s park with swings, see saws etc. After a few steps, we reached the aquarium and the mini bird sanctuary which had a lot of variety of birds such as pigeons, finches, parrots, love birds etc. If you are an adventure lover, I’d recommend you to hire a bicycle as it would make the trek a lot easier. As we walked through the premises we found many monkeys on the trees and bum chums (not sure of its biological name) on the road. Please make sure that you walk carefully and don’t stamp them as every life on this Earth is valuable. We finally reached the tombs of Dutch Admiral Eustachius De Lannoy who assisted King Marthanda Verma in rebuilding this fort, his wife and son. Our walk didn’t end there! On our way back, we walked through teak trees and more monkeys. There were few rope games which both adults and kids would enjoy. It was almost 5 pm and we saw groups of monkeys going back to their homes. They were quite friendly and it was fun to watch their activities. At the end of the walk, it was time for some calories – I mean ice cream. It was definitely a walk to remember and an experience to cherish.
